Oak Forest, located north of Downtown just outside the 610 Loop, was established in 1947 by Oak Forest Realty Corporation, owned by Frank Sharp, a developer who would later establish the Sharpstown area. Almost all of the first houses were sold to World War II veterans for $8K to $10K. Oak Forest was annexed by Houston in 1949. Because a fair amount of the area was reserved for commercial development, there were services to support the influx of residents.
